Data has the power to revolutionise and
disrupt the way societies are governed. The
urge for improvisation and standardisation of
the data for better decision-making lead to the
development of open data initiative.
Karnataka Open Data is an initiative where the
government data is made available which can
be utilised by its several stakeholders for various
purposes like research, developments etc. The
government of Karnataka has published the
Karnataka open data policy in the year 2021. This framework discusses the various Data principles and the
Data governance structure. The governance committees have been formed to oversee and approve the
developments and design processes.
The data ecosystem has been developed in the state to enhance data driven decision making using the fast-
evolving technologies. With an urge to mobilize the departments, all the departments in the state have been
approached and trained about the need of open data and its impact. More than 150 CDOs work collaboratively
on data quality and ensure that no personal or sensitive data is disclosed on the open platform. The high
value datasets like the crop survey, crime review report, air and water quality datasets have been utilized by
several researchers to build predictive models using Artificial Intelligence.
This portal enables all departments and organisations to publish datasets through a single interface in
various formats. These datasets are not only useful for G2G which helps in better decision making but its
usability extends for G2C as well. The KODI serves as a data source for the Data lake project initiated by GoK.
The crop survey and crop cutting datasets have paved a way for several start-ups to visualise, and predict,
target areas to sell their products to farmers which has also grabbed the attention of both national and
international researchers in the field of Agri-tech.
